How to Measure a Garage Door (and Pick the Right Kit)
Measure your door and count your panels in a couple of minutes, then order the kit that fits first time. All you need is a tape measure.
Measure the width and height
Stand inside, facing the door. Measure across at the widest point, then floor to the top of the opening. Write both numbers down.
Count the horizontal sections
Count the panel rows running across the door. A single has 8, a standard double 16, and an extra-wide or extra-tall double 20 or more.
Match your door to a kit
Your section count picks the kit: 8 panel for a single, 16 for a standard double, 20 for an oversized double. Add seals if you see daylight around the frame.
What you need
- A steel or fibreglass tape measure (3 metres or longer covers most doors)
- A notepad or your phone to jot down the numbers
That is it. No special tools.
Step 1. Measure the width and height of your garage door
Stand inside the garage, facing the door from behind.
Width. Measure across the door from left edge to right edge. Take this at the widest point.
Height. Measure from the floor to the top of the door opening.
Write both numbers down. You do not need to convert them to metric; just note what your tape shows.
Step 2. Count the horizontal sections
This is the key step. Look at your door and count the horizontal panels running across it from side to side. Each row is one section.
A standard single door has 8 sections. A standard double has 16. An extra-wide or extra-tall double often has 20 or more.
Count the rows carefully. That number tells you which kit you need.

Worked example
Say you pull out your tape and count the panels on your double garage door. You get 16 rows. Width looks about average for a two-car door. That puts you on the Standard Double 16-panel kit at $700. Order it, and the panels cut and press straight into each section.
Got a wider door, or one that needed an extra row of panels for a higher ceiling? Count comes out to 18 or 20. That is the XL Double 20-panel kit at $880.
Gaps around the frame
